The Loud Media And Ebola

Written by Kolawole Ilesanmi

You would all agree with me that the scare of contacting Ebola Virus Disease is really the beginning of wisdom, You would recall a certain liberian/American diplomat Patrick sawyer once brought the dreaded Ebola Virus disease into Nigeria, and months after he died in a Lagos hospital, some Nigerians who came in contact with the Liberian either directly and indirectly lost their lives or were quarantined in various rehabilitation centers Nationwide, in fact.

The word Ebola at one point was arguably the most common and most popular word on the lip of almost every Nigerian, especially in those states where people were diagnosed with the dreaded Virus, infact a popular port-harcourt based musician by name Oba Omega went as far as releasing a music track titled Ebola. I personally practically placed my self on house arrest for weeks, and restrained my self from exchanging direct pleasantries such as hugs and handshakes with individuals, it was that serious.

Many accolades has to go to the media especially the social media, Facebook, twitter, bb broadcasts, bb channels etc. for contributing immensely to the successful combating and final eradication of the Ebola Virus Disease. Media houses both local and international also spent quality time sensitizing individuals on the importance of sanitizing our hands and environs, eating well cooked meals, avoiding contacts with bush meats, sick and dead people etc.

The internet today which seems to be the most adequate means of disseminating information to each and every part of the world within seconds, was also adequately exploited by both web developers, bloggers such as myself, online advertisers etc. in the sensitization of not just Nigerians but other web users world over about the possible means of dealing with the dreaded disease.
Fortunately all these measures with the assistance of the federal Government of Nigeria proved very positive, as the EVD only lasted a few months in the country, and I can boldly and proudly write that as at the time of this publication, EVD is now a thing of the past in this great country called Nigeria, and countries such as the United Stated of America are employing the tactical measures used by Nigeria in combating and eradicating the dreaded disease

Well without a doubt it is now a clear fact that the media especially the social media is not just a tool for disseminating irrelevant and annoying broadcasts and informations alone, cos thanks to these mediums EVD sensitization was able to cut across the most remote part of the country and has successfully made Nigeria an Ebola free Nation
