Government And The Gains Of Prostitution

Written by Kolawole Ilesanmi

Prostitution as we all know is arguably the oldest profession known 2 mankind, infact it dates back to the 4th century.

The Biblical story of Judah and Tamar (Genesis38) provides a depiction of prostitution as practiced in the society of the time, in then Israel.

In our world 2day prostitution has taken several dimensions, and has been packaged to suit various classes of individuals, and purposes, there are now various classes of prostitutes, ranging from corporate, to roadside, to online prostitution which seems to be the most lucrative in this internet and social Media age.

Thanks to Badoo, Facebook, Twitter, Intagram, BBM etc, it is now easier for these 'Asawo's' to market their products, and also have the opportunity to meet with potential clients and showcase their assets before going on to book appointments and so on.

2 years ago i came across a very beautiful young lady on badoo, and before I could say hi she replied '' short time #30.000 overnight #60.000 immediately i was overwhelmed and overshadowed with shock, that is to say badoo was more like her office, where she normally meets with potential clients and negotiate prices, well i was not disappointed because she had successfully drafted out a means of survival in a country where the average youth is not guaranteed a good job even with a University degree.

As a matter of fact in most developed countries like the US, high profile prostitutes are more like celebrities as we've often seen them grace front pages of high profile celebrity magazines. This is because the Westerners have been able 2 accept all manner of professions and humans as part of society, and there's no such thing as stigmatization.

In a random research carried out last year here in Nigeria, it was revealed that an average active low classed prostitute makes at least #5.000 daily on a bad day, so you can imagine how much these girls rake in every month, in fact some high profile prostitutes charge as high as  #100.000 per night. The business has become so lucrative in Nigeria that girls from neighboring African countries have found a haven here in Nigeria; in fact from what i heard the foreign girls even charge more than our 9ja babes.

How Can Government Benefit From This

Over the years I've had to say this repeatedly, Instead of harassing these prostitutes and frustrating their business, Government should device means of tapping into this age-old lucrative profession. Legalizing prostitution would go a long way in organizing them and bringing them under one umbrella as a body.

Government should set up an agency which would be responsible for the registration of these prostitutes with a form of identification given to each and every registered member,  the criteria's for this registration should go thus: each prostitute should be at least 20 years and above, each prostitute should be attached to a brothel or a hotel so as to avoid them hanging around street corners, and to also ascertain the actual amount they make daily. After the registration any prostitute caught operating without a federal government license, can then be arrested and tried accordingly. After all said and done government can then calculate their taxes based on how much they earn daily and tax them accordingly.

Eliminating prostitution from any society especially in a 3rd world country like ours is practically impossible, judging by the fact that men's insatiable appetite for sex is on the rise, and the harder Govt attempts to frustrate the business of prostitution the more the it thrives.
