According
to information going round, the security details attached to the Speaker, House
of Representatives, Hon Aminu Tambuwal who were withdrawn will be restored.
It
will be recalled that upon the Speaker’s defection to the APC, the acting IGP,
Suleiman Abba swung into action and ordered the immediate withdrawal of his
security details quoting some parts of the 1999 constitution.
The
action had been widely condemned as politically motivated since the police
are not empowered to interpret a constitutional matter.
Incidentally,
the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Civil Defence Corps did not
withdraw their men.
According
to a security source, the acting IG “clearly acted on bad legal advice in
taking the decision”.
He
said President Goodluck Jonathan, who has been accused by the APC of giving the
order to withdraw the police officers, will convene a meeting on Friday to
resolve the impasse.
Presidency
is yet to make an official pronouncement on the development despite all fingers
pointing in the direction of Jonathan.
“The
president believes in the rule of law and it is becoming glaring that the
police did not get good legal advice in taking the decision they took. If the
president was the one that ordered it, as claimed, why would he not also order
DSS and civil defence to withdraw their men?” he asked.
However, it is still considered “highly
improbable” that the police would withdraw the security aides of Nigeria’s No.
4 citizen without the knowledge of the president.
