Yomi Fabiyi, Anita Joseph, Others fight Piracy

Piracy in Nigeria has almost become a deadly virus that has no cure. Despite many efforts to force the cankerworm to its knees, the menace has continued to thrive in the country.

Few years ago, some entertainers embarked on hunger strike in a bid to bring an end to piracy, but it was as if the protesters, mainly music artiste, suffered in vain.

Even calls made to the government to ensure offenders are made to face stiffer penalties have not yielded any good result. Alaba International Market in Lagos, which some believe is the headquarters of pirates in Nigeria, has continued to boom in the business.

But a group of movie stars seem to be now ready to declare a total war on piracy in Nigeria. The group, called ‘The Save Group Foundation’, has Nollywood stars like Gabriel Afolayan, Anita Joseph, Yomi Fabiyi, Ara and several others.

According to the group, they will kick start a campaign tagged ‘Save Nigeria Movie Industry,’ which should tackle the various challenges facing the industry.

Director of Secretariat & Communications of the group, Gabriel Afolayan, stated that the foundation welcomes ideas, recommendations, articles on one or all on piracy, distribution market regulation, central regulatory body & structure, film funds, location license, production tax and many other issues affecting the movie industry.
