Driver kills policeman in Warri

Police in Delta State, yesterday arrested Peter Bolorunduro Igbekele, 25, for allegedly knocking down a policeman (names withheld) at the DSC Round about, Effurun.

A swift statement by DSP Celestina Kalu (Mrs.), Police Public Relations Officer, Delta State Command said that the victim, a Cadet ASP attached to the Ebrumede Police Division was on duty at about 11am at the point where he was hit by Igbekele.

The cadet officer died on the way to the hospital. The aforementioned driver has been arrested, and he claimed to have lost control of the vehicle. Meanwhile investigation into the incident has commenced with a view to determining whether the action of the driver was deliberate or otherwise.

The Command wishes to warn all motorists against careless driving as anyone caught will be made to face the full wrath of the law, DSP Kalu stated.

A witness at the scene however said, It is a pity, but the police need to watch their ways. It beats my imagination why policemen should mount checkpoints and road blocks at a roundabout, not in the least a busy one like the DSC Roundabout. It is unfortunate like I said, but it is avoidable for police to hang around roundabouts.
