Barcelona
midfielder, Xavi Hernandez has equalled the all- time record for Champions
League appearances in football.
The Spanish midfielder, who
made his 142nd appearance after starting for Barcelona in their 1 –
0 victory against Apoel Tel Aviv on Wednesday, September 17, 2014, equalled the
record set by his former Spanish teammate who used to play for Real
Madrid FC, Raúl González.
Raul and Xavi now sit on 142
matches in the Champions League elite class, ahead of only Ryan Giggs and
Real Madrid’s captain and goalkeeper, Iker Casillas who are on 141
each.
Meanwhile Xavi Hernandez and
Iker Casillas will likely be vying for the record from this season as they both
still feature prominently in their teams while both Ryan Giggs and Raul
Gonzalez have left the stage, with the former retired and now an Assistant
Coach for Manchester United while the other now plays in Qatar for AL SADD
respectively.
